A very polymorphic species, living around the Mediterranean Sea. Many different subspecies and forms live in Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Spain, Portugal, France and Italy (Lampedusa Is.). In my opinion, a population of Julodis onopordi (probably a different subspecies), or a different species closely related to it, was living also in Sicily, at least at the end of the 19th century of beginning of the 20th, but it was extinguished by intensive agriculture (there are few old citations in literature, but no known specimen). The centre of dispersion of this species must be in Maghreb. The olotype from Barbarie by Fabricius was lost, so we don't know what's the typical form, but it must be placed in the group of J. onopordi koenigi/setifensis/leucosticta. These are subspecies I have in my collection. There are also many intermediate forms I don't put here.
